Online Advertising - Google Ads and the rest

Online ads are a highly efficient way of attracting business. All the major search engines offer these, using their technology to decide which adverts to show when searches are made. Here's how they work:

  • someone makes a search which causes your ad to be shown
  • they find your ad interesting, and click on it
  • this directs them straight to your website

This is great, but the best thing is that you only pay if they click on the ad – so you don't pay for your ad to be shown to people who have no interest in it. You might think that this is obvious - why should you? But when you think about it, it's completely different from all other advertising – such as newspaper ads, TV ads or even direct mail. With all of these you pay to talk to everyone, whether they’re interested or not. This makes online ads much more efficient than 'conventional' advertising.

You can also run a small campaign. You can cap the costs at a few pounds a day - you ad will be shown on only a proportion of the occasions when it qualifies. OK, you're missing out on opportunities, but at least you can afford to do some advertising. You can't put an ad in the Daily Mail for just a few thousand copies of the print run, can you? - but you can start small with online ads and build up as you go. You can stop or start them whenever you want, with just a click of a mouse.

Best of all, you can track exactly how much traffic your ads are generating. By using tracking tools, you can follow customers from your ad to your website, and see exactly what they do - so you can quantify the benefits of the ads you're running.
